當代指揮中，古典、現代、歌劇都擅長者不多見，七十歲的戴維斯是其中佼佼者。原在劍橋大學時學管風琴的他，因友人邀請指揮海頓、莫札特音樂會決定踏上指揮路。指揮老師最初給他的「忠告」卻是「你得在古典、現代或歌劇路線擇一」。

「我心想：才不，既然是音樂家，就該所有類型都能掌握！」戴維斯說，後來他赴義大利師從指揮大師費拉拉，返英後即擔任蘇格蘭交響樂團助理指揮。

戴維斯認為，要當名好指揮，最重要的是將內心對音樂的感受傳達給樂團，進而傳達給觀眾。

BBC交響以擔任逍遙音樂節「最終夜」演出樂團聞名，曲目包括艾爾加「威風凜凜」進行曲，戴維斯正是BBC史上演出最多次該曲的指揮，來台也將演出該曲。談到「唐懷瑟」，戴維斯指出，華格納向來善於呈現神聖與世俗間的衝突，「唐懷瑟」尤然；「這兩種價值向來同時存在於人性，『唐懷瑟』表現了兩價值的撞擊。」

BBC交響樂團今晚在台北國家音樂廳演出，戴維斯表示，演出現代作品向來是BBC重要使命，「帶給我們向前邁進的力量。」他笑說，也許下次可演奏台灣音樂家的作品。
