（中央社記者廖漢原華盛頓23日專電）美國維吉尼亞州檢察長赫林今天宣布，將不為挑戰維州禁止同性戀婚姻的訴訟案辯護，位於南方的維州有機會成為美國第18個承認同志婚姻的州。

維州檢察長赫林（Mark Herring）23日召開記者會表示，維州在美國史上多次爭議中選錯了邊，包括1954年的校園反種族隔離案、1967年的跨種族婚姻案和1996年的女性加入維吉尼亞軍校案，現在是維州站在歷史與法律正確一方的時刻。

維州於2006年通過禁止同性婚姻、公民組合與同志伴侶的州修憲案，來自維州諾福克（Norfolk）和里契蒙（Richmond）的兩對同性戀伴侶分別提出違反美國憲法的訴訟案，全案將於30日在諾福克開庭。

民主黨籍的赫林指出，婚姻自由是基本人權，身為州檢察長，他無法也不會為侵犯維州居民憲法權利的法律辯護。

民主黨籍的州長麥考里夫（Terry McAuliffe）也宣布，支持婚姻平權與同性戀者權益。

維吉尼亞州屬保守地區，維州能否成為美國南方首個同志婚姻合法化的州，引起全美高度重視，同性戀權益和律師團體高度參與這起個案，希望同志婚姻能破冰進入南方，但共和黨籍州議員和部分地方人士揚言爭取法律自主權，誓言反對到底。

美國聯邦政府2013年6月起承認同性戀婚姻，地方上有17州和華盛頓特區承認。猶他州去年12月允許同志婚姻遭上訴挑戰，暫時凍結。維吉尼亞有機會成為美國第18個同志婚姻合法的州。1030124
