據英國《每日郵報》10月23日報導，美國賓西法尼亞州的男子加里·馬修斯(Gary Matthews)雖然擁有人的身體，靈魂卻和狗類一般。現年47歲的馬修從小就認為自己是一隻狗，並從8歲(1979年)開始了自己的『擬狗』生活。

根據環球網報導，他還記得當時非常炎熱，他趴在自己家的地板上想要使自己涼快些。這一行為便徹底了改變了他的人生態度。馬修表示，『我夢想著自己有一天真正成為一隻狗。那意味著我會『四肢著地』，但是我願意，我非常願意』。他給自己起了狗的名字，叫布默(Boomer)，他睡在狗屋子裡，趴在地上吃狗糧，甚至會對著過往的路人和其他狗犬吠。更為誇張地是，馬修用白色和灰色紙為自己量身製作了『皮毛』。據了解，每天醒來第一件事，馬修都要先扎頭髮，左右各扎一個類似於狗耳朵的一小撮頭髮。然後，他給自己帶上狗項圈。

據悉，馬修曾是一名IT技術員，目前處於失業狀態。然而，他從不為自己的行為所困擾，並且他認為這就是他自己，他喜歡這樣的自己。美國《國家地理》雜誌寫道，現實生活中還有其他人像布默這樣生活，以為自己並不是人類。而早在20世紀80年代，美國就已經承認了這類人群的存在。

【盧麗蓮／綜合報導】台北陳小姐日前到超商買幼筍罐頭，還沒開封食用，就發現罐子裡出現一隻小強，她氣得投訴業者，但業者竟跟她說：「做食品難免有蟑螂」，讓她難以接受。

《聯合報》報導，陳小姐發現小強在罐子內後，立刻向業者反映，製造商本月19日派北區葉副理到家裡致意，她向對方表示不需要退貨或退錢，只要求製造商查明原因，葉副理離開後未再和她聯繫。總公司負責品管的莊先生表示，過去未曾發生此事，目前正針對原料、製成到包裝進行檢討，結束後會向消費者說明。

日前中國北京大學政治解聘了簽署零八憲章的經濟學者夏業良教授。對此一事件的發展，美國衛斯理學院百餘名教授曾聯名發表公開信表達關切，近幾天國際媒體亦廣泛批評質疑此解聘。台大更有數十位教授與近十個學生團體聯名聲援與抗議，要求台大檢討與北大的交流，捍衛學術自由。

正如《紐約時報》九月底一篇〈被箝制的中國大學〉的報導所指出，中國大學言論風氣持續保守化，而且現正經歷近年來最大規模的政府壓制。夏業良案只是中國普遍缺少精神自由的案例之一。北京大學新聞學院副教授焦國標在2004年發表「討伐中宣部」長文，隔年就遭解聘。

今年五月，華東政法大學張雪忠教授也因批評習近平上台後的反憲政主義逆流而遭「停課」。這些案件所顯示的是中國的大學與政府對各種言論的聯合整治，而北大竟以學術專業審查為理由，掩飾其政治解聘的決定。
北大發言人蔣朗朗受訪強調夏業良考評不佳，「不再續聘夏業良的決定沒有受到教學科研之外的其他因素的干擾和影響，……北大相容並包、學術自由的傳統也不會改變。」但實際上，教研評鑑的過程完全缺乏程序正義與資訊透明。北大校長王恩哥為國際知名的物理學家，深知學術自由對於科學研究的重要性，其所領導的北大卻成為威權政治干預學術自由的工具，北大官網還將黨書記列名於校長之前，不啻直接證明北大發言人公開侈言學術自由的荒謬。
就在台大師生聯合發起聲援之際，台大副校長張慶瑞正好在北大參加物理系百年慶典，並在致辭中表示，台灣大學至今仍然延續了傅斯年先生從北大帶來的優良傳統。傅先生擔任台大校長期間曾發生四六事件，其角色容有爭議，他對台大的貢獻仍多受推崇。傅校長在任僅一年多，之後台大發生殷海光教授「不再續聘」、哲學系事件等多起危害學術自由事件，何來學術自由的優良傳統？

歷經政大野火、校園去蔣、反白色恐怖罷課、一百行動聯盟，乃至近年成大的零一社，台灣的學術自由是多年來許多師生共同奮鬥爭取的結果。即便是在民主化的台灣，精神自由仍需要持續地實踐與守護。有人認為現在的台灣已經不可能發生類似北大的狀況，但「檢調治國」的事件讓人驚覺，威權復辟的陰影仍無所不在。
學術自由的普世價值必須被捍衛。面對北大以及整個中國在言論、學術與精神自由領域廣受壓制的現象，各校、各國都有責任。台大校長楊泮池在上任之初，即強調大學最重要的是社會責任。檢討與北大的學術交流，並且在兩岸的學術交流協議中，納入保障學術自由的條款，是楊校長上任後清楚展現其社會責任的機會。如果在學術自由這麼重要的精神領域都要放棄原則、屈服於現實，連一點最起碼的努力都沒有，那中南海的威權指令終究會毀壞台灣的精神自由，而且這種「侵蝕」早已開始慢慢地滲入台灣學術界的靈魂。
